Soft food diet after surgery

After surgery, the swelling around the esophagus and stomach may stop large pieces of food from passing. However, to heal after surgery, the patient need to eat well. These foods are easy to eat and digest while providing needed nutrition.

They also tend to be foods that will cause less irritation when they are digested. This diet is used for patients who are not ready for foods of normal consistency or with too many spices after trauma, surgery, or other treatments.

A soft food diet includes foods that are both soft and moist. Typically, a soft diet is recommended for the first 2 to 8 weeks following surgery. Patient will then slowly advance to a regular diet; depending on the progress and tolerance for food. The foods patient tolerate can vary greatly from one person to the next.

Patient should take foods that are easy to swallow and digest. These usually consist of soft, moist foods such as soup, gelatin, pudding, and yogurt. Avoid gummy foods such as bread and tough meats, as well as spicy, fried, or gas-producing foods.
