Causes of eating disorder

There are three main types of eating disorders – anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. There are differences between them, but they also share many features.

Although eating disorders have many roots the role of socio-cultural pressures cannot be ignored. It is generally accepted that Western society is very appearance oriented.

Extreme body image concern is recognized as a precursor for eating disorders in at risk populations and as the main factor in the psychopathology of eating disorders.

The current Western cultural conception of feminine beauty emphasizes thinness and attractiveness.

Disordered eating is used by many as a way of improving body image, in the quest for better self esteem.

However, most clinicians believe that there are many other contributing factors, including psychological, social, familial, spiritual and at times biological.

Genetics may also be a factor. Research in this area has been initiated in part by the observation that anorexia can run in families, and that bulimia repeatedly occurs in families where members suffer from depression or alcoholism.
